Summer plans may have changed due to COVID-19. Have you thought about taking a summer class? Take a look at courses that still have seats open.

Summer is a great time for internships and vacation, but COVID-19 has changed a lot of summer plans. Tippie is offering quite a few summer offerings that would help you stay busy and continue to make progress toward graduation. There are open seats in these classes and more could be coming:

Managerial Accounting, Auditing, Business Law, Business Computing Essentials, Information Systems, Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, and Individuals, Teams, and Organizations.

If you want a particular course that you can’t find, let your advisor know!

Looking for a professional mentor this summer?

The Summer Mentor Program targets Tippie students and graduating seniors (December 2019 and later) who have an internship or volunteer opportunity during the summer. The program matches students with an alum in their target industry, and, where applicable, in the same city. The mentor serves as a professional resource for the student and helps the student build their professional network in that industry and city. The program is based primarily on virtual meetings. The application is due May 13 and can be found here.

Below is a bit more information about the program:

Who are the mentors? Tippie alums working in the mentee’s target industry and, where applicable, in the same city of their internship / volunteer opportunity.

How does it help? Provides access to the Hawkeye community outside Iowa City as well as insight into careers and professional opportunities.

How does it work? The mentor will contact the mentee at the beginning of summer and will meet with them several times virtually throughout the summer.

How big of a time commitment is it? We provide guidelines and resources in the program kick-off call, touch base in the mid-summer survey, and will wrap up the program at the beginning of August. You will meet with your mentor ~3 times. This is a low to moderate time commitment.

How do I sign up? The application period is open until May 13. You will receive your match by May 22.

Navigating COVID-19 while Job & Internship Searching

During this time of uncertainty, we realize many students have questions related to both employment and graduate school plans.  For others, class registration also brings questions about major and career decision-making.  We also know some are dealing with delayed, canceled or rescinded internship or full-time job offers.

The Pomerantz Career Center and many others are here to help.

Drop deadline is Friday, May 8

The drop deadline for semester-long classes is this Friday, May 8.

The drop deadline normally occurs in the 10th week of the semester, but this extended date was provided to better serve students in the unique circumstances of this semester.

For this semester only, the drop deadline is also the deadline to withdraw from your entire Iowa schedule.  More information about that is here.  If you are considering a complete withdrawal, please reach out to your academic advisor as soon as possible.

What is the drop deadline?

  • The drop deadline is the date by which you can drop a course without seeking Dean’s permission.  You need to fully complete the drop of a course in MyUI by 11:59pm on Friday, May 8.
  • After this day, a drop may only be processed with a Dean’s authorization, which requires a petition showing extraordinary circumstances.  Academic performance is not considered an extraordinary cause for dropping a course after the drop deadline.
  • Courses that last for less than a full semester likely have different drop deadlines.  Please see the Registrar’s Course Calendar for specific course dates.

Be sure to get permissions early if you need them!
When you initiate the drop process for your course in MyUI, you will also be told if you need permission(s) to drop the course (such as advisor or ISSS).  These permissions, if required, must be requested by 4:00pm on Friday, May 8.

Questions?  Please reach out to your academic advisor this week with questions about dropping.

Pass/Nonpass: Important Information and Updates

Important reminders and updates about the Pass/Nonpass grading option this semester:

  1. The deadline to make your P/NP decisions is THIS Friday, May 8th at 11:59pm.  You make your selections on MyUI.
  2. There WILL be a process for you to change your decision after you see your final grade.  The UPO is developing a form that will be on the Tippie website for students to go back after their final grade is posted to either switch to the grade OR switch to the P/NP.
    • Please do not wait to see your final grade to make your decision.  Make your decision by the May 8 deadline with the information you have at that point, and only complete the form if you find this was not the correct decision for you.
    • The form to request a change should be submitted by Tuesday, May 26.

Other P/NP reminders:

  • Tippie’s FAQ page is your best resource for many questions about P/NP grading for Tippie students.
  • The University created a helpful guide to making your selection.
  • C- or higher is a Pass on the P/NP scale.
  • You have a GPA calculator on MyUI.

If you have questions on P/N, please review the links in this post. If your questions are not answered here, please reach out to your academic advisor.

Additional Financial Help because of COVID-19- CARES Act

Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund application (CARES Act)

The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act includes a Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF) that provides emergency funding to higher education for expenses related to the disruption of campus operations due to the COVID-19 crisis.

Through the CARES Act, University of Iowa Student Financial Aid has grant funding of $8.315 million available to assist UI students experiencing financial difficulties related to the disruption of campus operations due to COVID-19.

To be eligible for this assistance, students must:

  • Meet Title IV eligibility requirements
  • Demonstrate a financial hardship due to COVID-19 pandemic; and
  • Have submitted the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
    • Eligible students who have not filed the FAFSA and have not been awarded Federal Direct Stafford Loans must file a FAFSA to be considered for this assistance.

The application form will be available on May 4 and can be accessed at that time on MyUI/Financial Aid. Login requires a HawkID and password.

If you have questions regarding eligibility, timeline, or process, visit the UI Office of Student Financial Aid website.

Students who are ineligible for this Federal grant can still be considered for support through the Dean of Students Emergency Grant.  That application is available at https://dos.uiowa.edu/assistance/student-support-initiatives/.

Considering Pass/Nonpass vs Graded Courses This Semester?

The university deadline for electing P/NP for this semester is Friday, May 8.  Check out the Tippie FAQ  here.   Not sure what you want to do?   Students admitted to the Tippie College can complete a form to make change after May 8.  The form will be available after the deadline.  Students in other colleges (e.g. Prebusiness in Liberal Arts and Sciences) should check with their collegiate office.
