Interested In Taking a Class This Summer?  Registration Starts Next Week- March 9- March 13th.

Summer courses must meet minimum enrollments to be offered.  Cancellation decisions can be made at anytime, and we try to make decisions early to allow time for students to make other plans, if necessary. Consult with an academic advisor in the Undergraduate Program Office for academic planning.

Please see MyUI for a complete list of summer offerings and for registration details:

MSCI courses renamed BAIS

Important change in MyUI:

Due to the recent name change from the Department of Management Sciences to the Department of Business Analytics, all MSCI business core and major-level courses will be reclassified as BAIS courses beginning fall 2020. For the purpose of fall registration, students will need to use “BAIS” in the Course Subject field in MyUI in order to select courses from that department.

For example, MSCI:2800 Foundations of Business Analytics will be named BAIS:2800 Foundations of Business Analytics.

Summer courses are unchanged, so they will use the MSCI course subject.

Early registration for summer will run from March 9-13.

Early registration for fall will run from April 13 – 24.

BAIS:3000 and BAIS:3005 format updates

The business core is introducing a new format to BAIS:3000 Operations Management and BAIS:3005 Information Systems that becomes effective Fall 2020. The courses will change from 3 s.h. to 2 s.h., and each be offered off-cycle for 8 weeks each.

We know that changes in the curriculum bring up many questions. To help address those, please use our Frequently Asked Questions resource. Included are answers to questions like:

  • Why is this change happening?
  • How are the courses different?
  • What if I have already taken one or both?
  • What about the Second-Grade-Only option?

If you have already completed the courses or are currently enrolled in one/both, you have met the requirement for the course. We advise that you continue your enrollment to follow your academic plan and do not make changes to your registration based on this curriculum update. Changing your registration can significantly affect your course sequencing and has the potential to impact your graduation timeline. We advise to continue your enrollment. If you have concerns about this, please contact your academic advisor before making a change.

International Business Certificate

As you meet with your advisor about registration, ask about the International Business Certificate (IBC). Combine your curiosity about world cultures with coursework in international business. The IBC adds an international dimension to your degree with globally focused coursework, plus study abroad and language study options. It is a great way to use your non-business elective hours and select globally focused general education/business courses for your major.

The certificate includes 4 areas of study:

  • International Business
  • International Relations
  • Study Abroad and/or World Language
  • Area Studies based on where you study abroad or which language you study

Declare the IBC
You can declare the IBC by logging into MyUI and navigating to Student Information > Advising > Programs of Study and Advisors.

Questions?

  • Pull a “What-If” degree audit on MyUI for the IBC
  • Ask your academic advisor

Dropping a semester-long class? Today is last day without W on transcript

Today (Monday, February 3) is the last day to drop a semester-length course without that course appearing on your transcript.

After today, the course will appear on your transcript with a mark of “W” rather than a grade.  This does not affect your GPA.

Courses must be dropped in MyUI by 11:59pm tonight, but if you do require permissions for the drop, you must initiative the drop as early as possible today so that the offices have time to give the permissions.  Advisors do not receive notification when you initiate a drop, so please email your advisor if you have initiated a drop and require their approval.

The full policy for adding and dropping is found here.

Courses shorter than a full semester have different drop/add deadlines.  You can search for the deadlines of your course here.

Dean’s Welcome for Spring 2020

It definitely doesn’t feel like “Spring 2020” to me this morning! Even so, I welcome the technical label because it signals a fresh start and an opportunity for us to come together (again) and learn!

This past weekend we honored the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King’s legacy. The University held service events yesterday, and there are a number of other events going on this week, including a lecture by Anita Hill on ending sexual harassment.

Stanford MLK Institute Landing Page

Most of us in the US grew up listening to Dr. King’s famous “I have a dream<" speech. Even so, it feels new and powerful every time I hear it. More recently, in my teaching, I've been referencing his "Letter from a Birmingham Jail." You can read the typed original here (and listen to the audio with the prior link), both from archives at Stanford University.

We are living in times with a lot of disagreement and fear, as well as excitement and joy. These emotions are not unique in our country’s history by any means, but it can be scary. A key theme of King’s is worth remembering as you settle into this semester’s classes amid the roar of political drama — impeachment, caucuses, and US-Iran tensions.

King preached love. In fact, he was quoted as saying, “Love is the only way.” So as you settle in and get to work, when you hit a moment of frustration, I urge you to slow down and connect to those around you. Find ways to help others, and let them help you. There is a great deal of love in this community and I hope you will find ways to be part of it. If you want any guidance on how and where to connect, let me or your advisor know. We love being part of this community, and helping others.

And my final words of advice as we kick off the semester — stay warm, stay hydrated, and get to class! Go Hawks!
