Additional Financial Help because of COVID-19- CARES Act

Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund application (CARES Act)

The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act includes a Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF) that provides emergency funding to higher education for expenses related to the disruption of campus operations due to the COVID-19 crisis.

Through the CARES Act, University of Iowa Student Financial Aid has grant funding of $8.315 million available to assist UI students experiencing financial difficulties related to the disruption of campus operations due to COVID-19.

To be eligible for this assistance, students must:

  • Meet Title IV eligibility requirements
  • Demonstrate a financial hardship due to COVID-19 pandemic; and
  • Have submitted the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
    • Eligible students who have not filed the FAFSA and have not been awarded Federal Direct Stafford Loans must file a FAFSA to be considered for this assistance.

The application form will be available on May 4 and can be accessed at that time on MyUI/Financial Aid. Login requires a HawkID and password.

If you have questions regarding eligibility, timeline, or process, visit the UI Office of Student Financial Aid website.

Students who are ineligible for this Federal grant can still be considered for support through the Dean of Students Emergency Grant.  That application is available at https://dos.uiowa.edu/assistance/student-support-initiatives/.

Pre-Biz student with a question for a Tippie advisor? Submit query through our online form

Are you advised by a Tippie advisor?  Please reach out to them with your questions while advising is remote.

Not advised by a Tippie advisor?  Please read on.

While the university has suspended face-to-face instruction, Tippie’s Undergraduate Program Office is conducting advising remotely. That includes our drop-in advising.

For usual advising matters (such as course planning for summer and fall), please connect with your assigned advisor according to any instructions you have received from them.

Tippie Dean’s Search Update

On March 30-31, the Tippie Dean’s Search Committee interviewed semi-finalist candidates via Zoom. We are pleased to announce we have identified, in consultation with Provost Fuentes, four highly qualified finalists who will move to the next stage of the process. We are excited about the strengths and experience that each of these finalists would bring to the role.

Originally, campus visits were scheduled for the end of April and beginning of May. After discussion with Provost Fuentes, we decided to proceed with the finalist interviews as scheduled via Zoom. Each candidate will have interviews over a two-day period. This allows us to continue to gather information about the candidates and allows the candidates to continue to learn more about Tippie and the University of Iowa. This will also keep the finalists engaged in our search process. If the search was paused, we run the risk of losing candidates to other ongoing searches.

The finalist interviews are scheduled for April 23-24, April 27-28, April 30-May 1, and May 4-5. The afternoon before each finalist interview, we will post the candidate’s name, bio, and curriculum vitae on the Tippie dean search website: https://tippie.uiowa.edu/dean-search

What will happen after the virtual finalist interviews? That will depend on several emerging factors. At this point, we plan to bring our top finalists to campus for in-person visits after it is safe to travel and gather.  It is important not only for us to have in-person meetings with the candidates, but also for the candidates to have an opportunity to visit campus.

The current COVID-19 situation has introduced some uncertainty to the dean search process. However, as with other aspects of our jobs, we are learning to adapt. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions.

Have questions about Pass/Nonpass? We have answers.

As you decide whether to take your courses for A-F grades or Pass/Nonpass this semester, we have two important resources to help you:

How Do I Decide if P/NP is the Right Option for Me?

The Tippie College is working with colleagues across campus to implement the Pass/Nonpass grading option that is available for undergraduate students this semester.  Students have the option to receive either the letter grade assigned by the professor or a P/NP designation for each course.

We don’t have all of the details ironed out to guide your decision making, yet the good news is that the decision deadline is more than a month away—May 8th, the last day of spring semester classes.  This coincides with the new last day to drop courses.  When UPO advisors have more information, we will be happy to answer your questions.

We encourage you to settle in to your new online courses over the several weeks before making a decision about grading.  It may take a few class meetings to adjust. It’s normal to experience some transitional issues as you learn how to keep learning with online instruction.

The University will be sending information about the process to declare P/NP in several weeks along with answers to frequently asked questions including what you should consider when making a decision.

A Message From Dean Brown

This is a surreal time, not without historical precedent, but certainly no history we’ve experienced together. I’m writing this from my home, where I’ve been working for over a week. I hope you are in a place that is safe and allows you moments of peace, and moments of time to learn when the opportunity presents.

The UPO staff and I are dedicated to your well-being and success. We have spent the last couple weeks preparing for the transition to online meetings and instruction, and this week we continue thinking of ways we can keep each of you moving forward toward graduation.

The university just released new information on extended timelines for registration, add/drop, and withdrawal. The end of classes and finals week will stay the same, but others things about your classes will change. Each of your faculty is making adjustments to your class to continue it fully online, and each understands that this is a challenging time.

If you have need for assistance to help you in any way, you have places to go. The Iowa Dean of Students can help with laptops and direct you to academic and health supports. Your advisor, and professor, are also ready to help too. We will do all we can to help you finish your classes, even under the strain and uncertainty of this pandemic.

More than anything we’re asking you to be patient with yourself and those around you. This time is hard on all of us, none of us will be doing our best work, and some of us will be hit harder because of illness or financial strain, or both.

To feel anxiety and worry at a time like now, and to struggle to meet academic deadlines, is normal. We are here to help, and I encourage you to ask for any help you need. And if you aren’t feeling well, physically or mentally, contact your local health care provider or call the University of Iowa Health Access Line: 800-777-8442. Video consults are now available if you have symptoms.

The university has set up a website, and Tippie has a companion FAQ, to answer your questions. These pages will be updated, so please check them along with your course ICON sites regularly.

The Tippie community is strong and it is unique in its emphasis on working together. We need that value more than ever in these stressful times. We will get through this, and we will get through it together.

Academic Advising is remote in the UPO. Here’s how it works.

While face-to-face instruction is suspended at the University of Iowa, the Undergraduate Program Office is advising students remotely, mainly by phone. The following processes are in place for the duration of this time:

Advising for Registration
If you must be authorized by your advisor to register for fall, please schedule an appointment with your advisor through MyUI as usual.

If you are not required to be authorized by your advisor but do want to talk with your advisor about your planning, please schedule an appointment with your advisor through MyUI as usual.

Prior to your meeting time, review your degree audit and have a draft plan of courses saved in Schedule Builder.

Please include your phone number in the Notes field when scheduling an appointment. If you do not include a phone number in that field, advisors will call the number listed on your student record. If you prefer a video meeting, please let your advisor know in advance so that arrangements can be made. While we will try to accommodate your preference, please note that not all advisors may have the ability to offer video conferencing.

Advising for Other Issues
If you have a question that is not connected to registration, you may either email or schedule an advising appointment, depending on the length of the query.

Please follow these guidelines for deciding whether to email or schedule an appointment:

– If the matter could reasonably be resolved in a drop-in meeting (5-10 minutes), please email your advisor.

– If the matter requires more time than this, please schedule an appointment with your advisor in MyUI.

Drop-In queries
If you are not advised in the Undergraduate Program Office and have an advising or admissions question, we are still happy to assist, as we would normally do during our drop-in hours.

Please complete the online Drop In Referral form to submit your query. It will be directed to the appropriate advisor who will be in touch with you shortly.
