Updates on COVID-19, Resources, and Upcoming Job Fairs

The Pomerantz Career Center and its affiliated partners have changed several processes to abide by the University’s requirements during this challenging time. We are monitoring how COVID-19 will impact internship programs and college hiring, but we are committed to working through this together to minimize any negative impact to students.

Please see below regarding some of the changes and new opportunities that are in place now and in the near future.

Virtual career advising started on March 16th. Make an appointment to speak with a Career Advisor through MyUI.

Our Career Peer Advisors are ready to help you with all your questions! Virtual Drop-In hours are M-F 10am – 3pm. Check out more info on this and other great details on some of the things we have put in place to better serve our students during the virtual period.

Handshake@UIOWA continues to be a great way for students to seek internships, volunteer positions, co-ops and jobs after graduation.

APRIL 15, 2020 | UI Virtual Career Fair
All UI Majors and Alumni are welcome to register.

After registration, Career Eco will send you an email about how to prepare for the day, and provide links to tutorial videos that walk you through the process.

Career Advising offered virtually starting March 16th

Virtual-only services begin on Monday, March 16th. Drop-ins and in-person appointments will be suspended until further notice.

Students may still schedule advising appointments via MyUI.  The Zoom link you will need to connect for your virtual career advising meeting will appear in the location and body of your confirmation and reminder emails.  Those who scheduled prior to the career center moving virtual, will receive a Zoom link via email from their advisor in advance so you can proceed with your scheduled meeting.

We apologize for this inconvenience and are doing the best we can to keep services available while abiding by University of Iowa’s social-distancing recommendations due to the COVID-19 outbreak. At the Pomerantz Career Center, students schedule advising appointments based on their interest in exploring or pursuing careers within career communities. Our career communities are organized by career fields and industries.

All UI undergraduate students have access to utilize these services at no additional cost.

EXPLORE

  • Find career communities of interest to you and schedule an appointment with a career advisor to assist as you begin exploring careers options.
  • Take an assessment if you’re feeling confused or overwhelmed about your interests, abilities and how those relate to majors and/or careers.
  • Conduct informational interviews to talk with professionals working in fields of interest to you.
  • Register for a Career Center course like, “Major and Career Exploration” or the “Career Leadership Academy”.

PREPARE

  • Write or update your resume and have it reviewed during walk-in advising.
  • When needed, prepare cover letters or other required documents.  These can also be reviewed during walk-in advising.
  • When ready, upload your resume into the Handshake site so you can begin applying for student employment or internship positions.
  • Create or update your LinkedIn profile and clean up all social media accounts.
  • Learn to network and prepare your introduction to new contacts and potential employers.
  • Prepare and practice for interviews by using Big Interview. Schedule a mock interview before the real deal.
  • If interested in graduate or professional school, review resources to help you research programs and manage applications.
  • Schedule an appointment with a career advisor for additional assistance and resources.

EXPERIENCE

  • Work part-time on or near campus.
  • Get involved in student organizations related to your career interests.
  • Volunteer in the community.
  • Find and complete one or more internships.
  • Consider studying abroad or working, interning or volunteering abroad.
  • Schedule an appointment with a career advisor for additional assistance and resources.

ACHIEVE

  • Use Handshake and Career Fairs to begin your job search.  Start 6-9 months before you graduate to maximize success.
  • Use additional job and internship links using Job Search section of our website.  More links are provided within your desired career community page.
  • Research employers using:  Research Basics, specific Career Community resources and Resources for Diverse populations within Job Search section of our website.
  • Evaluate job offers and learn more about negotiation before accepting an offer.
  • Apply to graduate or professional school if that is your desired next step.  Consider Gap Year Opportunities if you need more time or experience before applying.
  • Schedule an appointment with a career advisor for additional resources and help with your job search strategy, timeline and resources.
