National First-Generation College Celebration week, November 3- 8th 2019

This week, Colleges across campus are hosting first-generation events.

What Does “First-Generation” Mean at The University of Iowa?

At the University of Iowa, first-generation students are those students who do not have a parent(s) or guardian(s) who completed a four-year degree. Compared to their continuing generation peers, first-generation students may face a unique set challenges in their college transition and completion efforts, and often benefit from additional support of faculty and staff who are dedicated to their success. In addition, first-generation students share many common personal assets that also contribute to their success. The University of Iowa aims to celebrate these assets and help students learn to utilize them in order to reach their full potential and realize their academic goals.

Last Day to Drop Semester-Length Classes is Mon., November 4

It’s past the halfway point of the semester, so take a moment to evaluate where you stand in fall courses. If you are not sure how you are doing, have a conversation with your professor or TA.

The deadline to drop is Monday, November 4.  If you are thinking about dropping a course, talk to an advisor now instead of waiting for the day of the deadline. You need time to make a good decision.

As you know, early registration appointments are happening now. If you are advised by the Undergrad Program Office, drop ins (10:30-11:30 M-F, and 2-3 on M) may be you best option to discuss a drop, unless you already have a scheduled appointment. During drop ins you see the advisor on duty, not necessarily you advisor.

Drops after the deadline are not possible unless there is an extenuating circumstance that can be documented that prevented you from dropping on time or has affected your performance throughout the semester.

Studying Abroad soon? How to check which courses are approved

When researching study abroad programs outside of Tippie, like CIEE or an IES semester, it is important that you pay attention to which classes have been approved by Tippie. There is a step by step guide of how to do this on the Tippie Global Website.

  1. Visit the Study Abroad search to identify a partner program
  2. After finding a program, visit MyUI Transfer Institution Search
  3. Select transfer institution/Study abroad program where credit will be granted. See your study abroad advisor if you need help identifying the institution
    • Examples: IES- Institution for International Educ of Students Barcelona , Barcelona SPAIN, CIEE Shanghai, Shanghai CHINA, Wells College
  4. Select the UI College – “Tippie College of Business”
  5. Select the curriculum area of courses you would like returned- “All evaluated courses”
  6. Leave transfer department and course blank
  7. Results will show courses all that have been approved for transfer and the equivalency. Your advisor will indicate approval on your Credit Approval Form from the Study Abroad Office.
  8. If you do not see your institution, program, or class, you will need to request a course evaluation
