Accounting Major Update Change in the Writing Assessment Requirement

Effective for fall 2021, the accounting writing assessment is no longer a pre-requisite for access to accounting major courses. The writing assessment will instead be integrated into ACCT:3200 Income Measurement and Asset Valuation as part of our accounting writing program throughout the curriculum. Please contact Kevin Den Adel (kevin-denadel@uiowa.edu), Director of the Undergraduate Accounting Program, or Carl Follmer (carl-follmer@uiowa.edu), Associate Director of the Accounting Writing Program, if you have any questions about the accounting major or the accounting writing program.

Mindfulness workshops

Mindfulness is the practice being fully aware of the present moment (our thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, and environment), with a nonjudgmental stance of curiosity. It is associated with improvements in physical health, mental health, and overall well-being. Interested in learning more, or looking for new ways to manage stress? Global Virtual Internships Summer 2021

What is a Virtual Internship?

Call it what you will: Remote Internship, Virtual Internship, Online Internship, Tele-working, Telecommuting, it all means the same thing: you will be completing your international internship…directly from your own laptop!

Remote internships mean that you can work with companies across the globe to support a wide range of projects, from basic social media support to full business projects, website designs, market reports, financial assessments, usability testing code, and much much more.

Why do a virtual internship?

  • An internship looks great on your resume, especially with an international organization.
  • You can still work or take classes while completing an internship.
  • The cost of a virtual internship is almost a quarter of the cost of an on-site internship.
  • In-person internships both overseas and here in the US have been closed in most locations.
  • You can gain a 3, 4 or 6 credit internship credit that appears on your UI transcript.
  • You will gain valuable experiences working with an international company organization that you can talk about.

The University of Iowa has several partners for summer virtual global internships located around the world!  All of which are offered at a fraction of the cost of an on-site internship while still being open for scholarships and giving you the credit you need to fulfill experiential learning requirements.

Remote internships mean that you can work with companies across the globe to support projects in almost any major. Example range from social media support in London, website designs in Italy, working with NGO/nonprofits in Australia, exploring the environment, development and sustainability in India, finance or social entrepreneurship projects in Malaysia, to visual arts in Costa Rica, and much more.

When completing a remote internship many of the same aspects of a traditional in-person internship still exist, including meetings with your supervisor or teammates, completing a mix of individual and group projects, and learning about the overall company or organization and the culture it works in.

Internships through our providers also mean you will have an in-depth exploration of your host country’s work culture, gain career coaching and develop a cohort of other students all working ‘in’ your same location.

If you would like more information on virtual global internship options for the summer, contact:

Check your inbox for a Message from our Associate Dean of the Undergraduate Program Office, Ken Brown

Welcome back!

Spring 2021 semester is finally here, and there is light at the end of the coronavirus tunnel. That said, it is further away than we would prefer and 2020 took a toll on each of us, in different ways. Our thoughts are with you as you prepare to move forward into this year, and we stand ready to help you throughout this semester.

As we kick off the semester today, I want to share a few reminders and changes from the fall semester:

Pat’s Diner is reopening. We want you to use the Pappajohn Business Building, and in that spirit, we are re-opening Pat’s Diner for limited day-time hours. The college is subsidizing operations so we encourage you to come by and grab a drink or snack in support. Don’t forget to tell Jeff you missed him.
Limited eating and drinking now allowed. You may recall that following a rash of mask non-compliance in November, we limited eating and drinking in the building. Now that we are all settled into healthier habits, drinking is allowed anywhere in the building, but please put your mask back on immediately after. As for eating, please refrain from eating in classrooms. When you are in the gallerias, BizHub, and other open air spaces, please feel free to eat but only if you are six feet away from others and, again, please replace your mask promptly. And, as a courtesy to others, please clean your area before you leave. Wipes remain available throughout the building.
Keep that mask on. We ask that you wear a mask at all times in the building, and keep your distance from others both in and out of the classroom. If you are not wearing an approved mask, you will be asked to leave not just Pappajohn but any university building. Keep in mind that any space in a university building, even a closed conference room, is considered a public space and you must keep your mask on.
Remember to wash hands often, get enough sleep, and stay home if you are sick. One of the most common reasons students struggle academically is illness. Stay healthy so you can keep up with your classes and work! We want you to succeed.
2020 was a difficult year, and 2021 unfortunately holds many of the same challenges. With the excitement of a new beginnings (a new semester and soon, a new art building) and community wins (basketball and wrestling come to mind, among other things), we can pull together to finish out this academic year safely and successfully.

If there is anything that we can do to support you, please reach out to me or to your academic advisor. Go Hawks, and Tippie community, let’s get down to business!

Tippie team places third at National Diversity Case Competition

A student team from the Tippie College of Business placed third at the 10th Annual National Diversity Case Competition hosted by the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University.

The team included Jaiden Goodman, Baaba Saisie, Gina Waters, and Anna Zinselmeier. Goodman and Zinselmeier are peer tutors at the Frank Business Communication Center where they coach Tippie students in writing, speaking, and visual design.

“The Tippie College of Business is committed to graduating strong communicators and equipping students to think seriously about social issues relating to diversity and inclusion,” said Pamela Bourjaily, director of the Frank Business Communication Center and associate professor of instruction. “Our team’s placement at the premier diversity case competition in the country showcases our success in both those efforts.”

The case was provided by 3M’s Social Justice Strategy and Initiatives team and asked students to consider how the multinational company could engage “the broader organization to address some of the racial and socioeconomic inequities in our society.”

The competition is held annually over the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend. This year’s competition was conducted virtually and included teams from the University of Michigan, Boston College, and the University of Washington. For more information, visit the NDCC website.

Tippie’s Winter Read!

Tippie is excited to launch a new winter break program: Tippie’s Winter Read!

Join together as we read a novel together in the month of January.  The book is Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi.

Sign up to participate individually or with your student organization!  If you sign up, we’ll send you discussion questions throughout the month of January!

Homegoing is a novel that will allow us to reflect on history, on family, and on the current Black Lives Matter movement. The book starts in the 1700s and is about the family lineage of two Ghanian sisters. One sister stays in Ghana while the other sister is sold into slavery. Each chapter of the book is about another generation of the family lines: we read about southern plantations, jazz-era Harlem, Ghanian colonization, and more. The book weaves together wisdom through these stories because the author, Gyasi, is in some ways writing part of her story as a Ghanian-American.

Homegoing tackles difficult topics — depicting racism, violence, and demeaning language. Yet, its power is in the truths that it tells through the stories. The books is about 300 pages and was published in 2016.  It has won endless awards and can be found at libraries, online, or at any book store.
