All Systems GO for Iowa MBA Analytics Case Competition

The pieces are all falling into place for the second annual Iowa MBA Business Analytics Case Competition.  We sat down with event organizer Michael Geneser to learn more about the upcoming event.

Tell us about what motivated the Iowa MBA program to do an Analytics Case Competition:

With the change to the analytics academy we saw this as a good opportunity to showcase the exciting things that are being done in analytics at the University of Iowa, both on the Undergrad and Masters level.  There is a lot of exciting analytics and informatics activity at the University of Iowa.  Additionally, we didn’t really see a case competition being done in this specific context.

Will there be a specific focus to this year’s competition?

The focus will change each year based on the sponsor.  Last year’s sponsor was Unity Point Healthcare and the case was focused on Healthcare.  This year’s sponsor is 3M so the case will have a manufacturing focus.  The idea is each year would see a different topic.

Who will be some of the companies sending representatives this year?

We are seeing a pretty exciting lineup of company judges.  Pella will be coming back this year with judges.  Our sponsor 3M is also bringing judges down.  One that I’m really excited about is the Minnesota Vikings.  They are are co-sponsoring the event and will be sending their director of analytics as a judge.  There are also some very exciting potential judges from some very well known companies.

Last year’s case competition had great school representation, which schools will be there this year?

Including the team from Iowa there will be 16 teams set to compete.  It is truly a coast to coast competition this year.  From the East coast we have the University of Rochester and University of Massachusetts all the way over to West Coast with Cal Poly SLO.  We’ve even got schools coming from as far south as TCU from Texas.  Iowa, Purdue and Maryland will be the three teams representing the Big 10.

How do you like Iowa’s chances?

I think we will have a very strong team.  Last year’s Iowa team fared well, taking second place and with 2nd year MBA Kyle Wehr taking home best presenter.
