Peer Leaders

The University of Iowa seeks twelve peer leaders for The Iowa Edge--a five-day extended orientation program for 72 African American, Latino/a, American Indian, Asian American and first-generation college students.

The Iowa Edge will be held the week of August 18-22, one week before classes begin. Program participants will move into their residence hall rooms Monday, August 18, and participate in a variety of academic, recreational, and enrichment activities to better prepare for success at Iowa.

Responsibilities

Peer Leaders will:

  • Participate in ten hours of training during spring semester 2008.

    Attend a 4-hour training session, Sunday, August 17, 2008.

  • Learn about UI student resources such as Academic Advising, Financial Aid, and Center for Diversity & Enrichment (information provided at training session).

  • Provide appropriate leadership and display exemplary behavior and attitude at all times.

  • Help program participants move into the residence halls.

  • Facilitate recreational and social activities; encourage social interaction among students, faculty, and staff during program activities.

  • Participate in the UI Challenge Course, a team building activity.

  • Assist UI staff with other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Successful candidates will possess:

  • Strong academic record (minimum 2.5 GPA) and good study skills.

  • Knowledge of campus resources and organizations such as the Cultural Centers and UI offices mentioned above.

  • An interest in diversity and building community.

  • Excellent communication skills.

  • Good judgment.

Compensation

Peer Leaders will receive:

  • A $320-$360 stipend (depending upon past experience).

  • All group meals.

  • Admission to required activities.

  • Opportunities for additional spring and summer hours ($8.00-9.00/hour).
