Peer Leaders
The University of Iowa seeks twelve peer leaders for The Iowa Edge--a five-day extended orientation program for 72 African American, Latino/a, American Indian, Asian American and first-generation college students.
The Iowa Edge will be held the week of August 18-22, one week before classes begin. Program participants will move into their residence hall rooms Monday, August 18, and participate in a variety of academic, recreational, and enrichment activities to better prepare for success at Iowa.
Responsibilities
Peer Leaders will:
- Participate in ten hours of training during spring semester 2008.
Attend a 4-hour training session, Sunday, August 17, 2008.

Learn about UI student resources such as Academic Advising, Financial Aid, and Center for Diversity & Enrichment (information provided at training session).

Provide appropriate leadership and display exemplary behavior and attitude at all times.

Help program participants move into the residence halls.

Facilitate recreational and social activities; encourage social interaction among students, faculty, and staff during program activities.

Participate in the UI Challenge Course, a team building activity.

Assist UI staff with other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Successful candidates will possess:

Strong academic record (minimum 2.5 GPA) and good study skills.

Knowledge of campus resources and organizations such as the Cultural Centers and UI offices mentioned above.

An interest in diversity and building community.

Excellent communication skills.

Good judgment.
