Tippie Senate FAQ’s

Q) Can you use the conference rooms to study?

A) For the most part, yes, you can use the conference rooms to study.  During the day, however, the conference rooms may be reserved for various faculty and staff meetings.  As long as the rooms are not reserved, they are free for students to use for group studying/projects.

The primary complaint about conference room usage is when students are using them for individual studying.  Make sure you are using the conference room for group work, not individual study.

Q) Can you reserve the conference rooms?

A) LCD kiosks will be activated outside each conference room door allowing “on-the-spot” reservations.

Q) Why aren’t the conference rooms open on weekends?

A) The Facilities department has established that PBB classrooms and conference rooms are open 7 AM-10 PM on weekdays and closed all weekend. Please refer to http://www.biz.uiowa.edu/facilities/rooms/ for more information about PBB Classrooms and Conference Rooms.

Q) During what hours is the PBB open?

Q) How can I find out about other student organizations on campus?

A) Each semester, there is a College of Business “Student Org Fair” where the various organizations in the College set up displays to recruit prospective members.  For more information about Tippie College of Business opportunities, visit http://www.biz.uiowa.edu/upo.  If you are looking something outside of Tippie, check out http://imu.uiowa.edu/osl/.

Q) What is the Business Week Survey?

A) Business Week Magazine sends out the Business Week Survey each Fall.  The survey results determine where the Tippie College of Business is ranked among other undergraduate schools.  The ratings are important to many prospective students and employers.  It is important to give honest feedback in the survey, but the University never views answers to the survey.  If you feel you have complaints about the College of Business that need to be addressed, please notify the Tippie Senate and we will work to make changes.

Q) What can the Undergraduate Program Office (UPO) help me with?

A) The Undergraduate Program Office is a one-stop shop for student services in the College of Business.  The UPO provides academic advising for pre-business and business students.  You can talk to your academic advisor about admission, registration (adding and dropping classes), academic planning, transfer courses, study abroad, declaring your major, the certificate programs, and graduation requirements.  You can also come to the UPO to learn how to get involved in business student organizations, the London and Madrid internship programs, Honors, Business Week, how to apply for scholarships, and a variety of other programs and events.   For more information, visit the UPO website: http://www.biz.uiowa.edu/upo

Q) How come the walk-in hours have been decreased?

A) Walk-in hours have decreased due to the implementation of the online scheduling system for setting up meetings with advisors.  The new system makes it easier for students to set an appointment with advisors, especially around busy times.  If you would like to make an appointment, go to https://www.biz.uiowa.edu/upo/appointmentscheduler/logon.aspx?ReturnUrl= %2fupo%2fappointmentscheduler%2fschedule.aspx.

Q) Why do I have to take all of the core classes?  They have nothing to do with my major.

A) The core courses are an important part of the BBA degree.  The core courses provide a solid foundation in the functional areas (accounting, economics, finance, marketing, management & organizations, and management information systems) of business.  Many students find the core courses help them determine their major selection.  The major coursework builds on core business foundation, allowing students to develop a deeper understanding of one or more selected (major) areas.  It is important for Tippie students to develop a cross-functional understanding in order to be successful in today’s business world.

Q) How will Foundations of Business help me in the business world?

A) Foundations of Business is a writing and speaking intensive course that introduces the critically important work-life concepts of ethics and business protocol.  Some of the main areas of focus are:

  • introducing students to a new ethics curriculum
  • providing a way for students in team presentations to teach each other about  business protocol
  • providing a way for students  in team presentations to teach each other about a business/leadership book which each team chooses for themselves
  • using CPR, an online, web-based program to introduce good editing skills

The class examines several case studies and leadership principles that have led companies to success.  Students are placed in teams to work through ethical dilemmas, and are reminded of the importance of integrity and being a leader in any situation.  The class strengthens communication skills, while teaching valuable lessons to be applied in the business world. From the feedback received from employers, the professionals think Foundations is providing students with great skills, important knowledge, and a semester which will have relevance later in their careers.
