Tools for Success: Back in the Classroom

An example of our classrooms here at Tippie.

An example of our classrooms here at Tippie.

Many of you are returning to school for the first time in months or perhaps even years.  We’re glad you’ve decided to do so and extremely excited that you’ll be joining us in Iowa at the Tippie School of Management.  To ensure you’re able to hit the ground running from that first case presentation during IMPACT to researching companies for Henry Fund reports, Tippie and the University have a number of resources available to students that support your academic, professional, and personal development.

Write On

By Amy Kolen, MBA Writing Consultant

Do you want to make your writing stronger?  Would you like help with grammar, punctuation, structure, conciseness, and other writing issues?  Would you like someone to offer pointers on how to construct more effective business prose?

As MBA Writing Consultant, I work with you—free-of-charge!—on improving course-related writing for group and individual projects, scholarship, fellowship, and internship applications, letters of nomination and recommendation, emails, and more.  In conjunction with MBA Career Services, I also help provide advice on resumes and cover letters.

And my turnaround time is quick:

•Resumes and cover letters:  2 business days

•Papers 1 – 7 pages:  3 business days

•Longer papers and Henry Fund reports:  5 business days

If my schedule allows, I’m happy to review and return materials sooner.  It never hurts to ask!

Students typically work with me electronically, though I’m also available to meet with you by appointment.  My procedure for reviewing your Word docs is simple:  I edit on the screen, using Track Changes, providing detailed comments and suggestions, along with any questions I might have.  If you have questions after reading my review, I encourage you to let me know.  After you’ve proofed your work and accepted/rejected changes, you’re welcome to send your material back to me for a second review.

Here’s what one satisfied student had to say after we worked together:  “I actually really enjoyed the feedback. . .!  This was the first time I have had any writing proofread in a long time, so it was good for me to read through the changes and why they were made.”

For questions on voice, abbreviations, capitalization, titles, and other aspects of writing style and grammar, check the following site and bookmark:  http://www.biz.uiowa.edu/stylebook/written.html. You’ll also find links here to other helpful sites involving business writing and writing in general.

For those needing additional help, I strongly recommend the University’s writing center.  For the most up-to-date information on the Center’s programs, and for great links to sites dealing with grammar, mechanics, punctuation, style, and other writing questions and concerns, check the following Web site: http://www.uiowa.edu/~writingc.

The best way to reach me is by email:  amy-kolen@uiowa.edu.  I look forward to hearing from you and working with you this semester!

 Communication is Key

Learning how to effectively communicate is a key component to success in almost anything. In addition to your core course, Corporate Communications, the University and community offer several resources to hone your communication skills in a positive environment. For students joining us from around the globe, the University houses the Iowa Intensive English Program and English as a Second Language .  Both provide students the opportunity to enroll in credit-bearing courses to enhance their English language skills (a pre-test must be completed and course approval provided to enroll in ESL courses). Often students find one-on-one coaching to be more beneficial.  The ESL Department is often able to match students with individual instructors for additional coaching assistance. In addition to these services, many find participation in the University’s Campus Conversation Partners (CCP) program valuable.  CCP, as it is known across campus, matches interested students with a faculty, staff, or another student for informal conversation practice sessions.  Finally both non-native and native English speakers often find participation in Toastmasters, an international organization whose mission is to “ provide a mutually supportive and positive learning environment in which every individual member has the opportunity to develop oral communication and leadership skills, which in turn foster self-confidence and personal growth”.  The Iowa City area offers several different local chapters in which students can become members:

Meet the Faculty and Staff at Tippie

Jana Klauke

Jana Klauke
Associate Director of Career Services

What do you enjoy most about working with Tippie MBAs? Tippie MBAs are some of the smartest, most creative and driven students that I have met! It has been a pleasure to help with them define and work towards their career goals!

Something interesting about Jana: People are often surprised to learn that I am part of a competition BBQ team and am a certified Kansas City BBQ Judge! My husband and I got certified in 2010 and love to get out to help Big Tz Q Cru whenever we can(the Pitmaster and his wife are both Iowa alums)! Big Tz finished 14th out of over 4000 teams nationally last year and received top Iowa BBQ team the past two years! I love the combination of cooking and spending time with friends and family!
