It’s a tough job market out there. Lots of college graduates are worried they may not get the job of their dreams. Luckily for Tippie MBAs, we’ve given another option. Instead of asking for a job, we can just create our own. That’s what my classmates and I have been doing. I’ve been working to create a company through my IMIG project (which I’ve already discussed here ) but others have their own companies outside the medical field.
Recently we took part in the Iowa Centers for Enterprise Business Plan Competition, which gave out over $50,000 for start-up companies. We had to submit our plan and present to a panel of experts. Out of the dozens of groups that competed, 10 were given prizes, with nearly every MBA getting money. See the full list of winners online.
I can’t speak for the other teams, but our third place winnings are going to go a long way. We are have already ordered prototypes, and with this money we are going to be able to perform some efficacy testing crucial to proving the value of our design. If that goes well, then we can move forward with actual usage testing and eventually on to market! While there is no guarantee that this will turn into a successful full-time role, it’s definitely been one of the most rewarding experiences while here at Tippie. It’s rewarding both to know that I could be making a difference in peoples’ lives, but also living the American dream of turning an idea into a business and creating value for both myself and society.
