Wow, what a busy time as an MBA student! In addition to schoolwork, presentations, tests, guest speakers, business plans, I need to find time to search for a job! Luckily for me, I’m starting to see some success in that arena! While I was originally planning a majority of the responses to come in spring, within the span of a month I will have visited companies in Atlanta, Columbus (OH), and San Diego.
The most recent trip is a second-round interview with Sony (SNE) in California. I actually came about this opportunity back in February. An Iowa alum reached out and offered Tippie students the chance to compete in its marketing case competition. The school covered the cost to enter and travel, so I participated with hopes of taking home some prize money. While my team didn’t place well enough to earn the money, I was (apparently) able to make quite an impression on them. They even reached out to me to interview for an internship position last year, but I had already committed to another position. After the summer, they reached back out and I applied for a rotational program.
I guess the moral of the story here is that despite some misconceptions out there, going to school in Iowa will NOT limit you geographically. Tippie was the reason that I am a candidate at these places. If I don’t get a job there, it my own fault. You can get placed anywhere out of Tippie, you just have to seize any opportunity given and be proactive.
