Sunday, February 3rd, 2013 marked the showdown between the San Francisco 49ers and the Baltimore Ravens at Super Bowl XLVII. This date also commemorated the annual Graduate Marketing Association Super Bowl party held at the Airline, in downtown Iowa City. This event, open to MBA students’, families, and even a few lost undergrads, began similarly to most Super Bowl parties with pizza, hot wings, and lots of cheering. However, as we are MBA students, we couldn’t just let a party be a party. Instead, the GMA used this as a learning opportunity; and what better way to do this than turn it into a competition?
This year’s event focused on one of the most beloved things the Super Bowl has to offer: the advertisements. While past parties involved students passively ranking which ads were their favorites, this year, students were asked to put themselves in consumer’s shoes and rate which commercials were the most effective. Whichever students matched up with our judges’ ruling the closest won bragging rights and a classy $3.00 trophy to hold over all their peers.
If this wasn’t enough to get the student competitive blood pumping, half time also included a bar-style trivia contest cover everything from Super Bowl trivia to facts about a number of famous brands. Seven teams of between 2 and 4 people took part and battled over some lovely Tippie MBA branded fleece blankets. The winning team, the Factoids, pulled ahead in the last category winning the contest by a nail-biting single point.
The event had a great turnout, including a few professors and staff members who stopped in to join the fun. Even through the power-outage stricken 3rd quarter, students and staff enjoyed friendly conversations, good food, and a wide range of interesting ads. The GMA chalked this one up as a great success and looks forward to more events this spring.
