Welcome to the 2013 – 2014 school year! This year started off with an opportunity to listen and interact with a great speaker. Justine Metz, Head of Global Wealth Management Marketing and Sales Support at Bank of America gave a presentation and had an interactive Q&A session about what she feels makes a strong leader.

Before the presentation, Justine met with the MBAWI (MBA Women International) Tippie Chapter for lunch and networking. She also brought two leaders from nearby Merrill Lynch offices (Cedar Rapids and Davenport) to network with students. They were upfront about the fact that these are good connections and encouraged students to discuss career opportunities with them. After the presentation and Q&A session, Tippie held a reception to provide an additional outlet for students to network with these individuals.

Justine’s presentation was really a breakdown of what she has seen to be effective methods of leadership in her 25+ year career. She touched on communication, empowerment, trust, and personal value systems, among other topics. In the Q&A session she disclosed her biggest mistake, and how she helped to deal with the financial crisis. Justine was open, honest, and asked for feedback along the way.

One of the biggest take-aways students felt was the need to develop your own set of values and pursue a career with a company that shares those same values. It was nice to be exposed to this strong of a leader during the first week of classes!
