On the Road Again

Adia May, Tippie Alum

Adia May, Tippie Alum

This past weekend I took my first trip to Houston Texas to attend the National Black Pre-MBA Conference. I met some great people including prospective students, colleagues from other MBA programs, and one of our very accomplished alums, Adia May.

Adia graduated from our joint JD/MBA program in 2002 and is the founder and CEO of Zuri Entertainment LLC, which services clients in LA, Chicago, and New York. Adia was a keynote speaker at the National Black MBA conference and apparently was a hit (unfortunately my flight was delayed so I didn’t get to see her speak).

I was so impressed with Adia’s professionalism and ambition. It’s always exciting to see our alumni doing well and being such strong advocates for the Tippie program. For those of you who are interested in Hollywood stars, Adia represents an impressive list of clients including Kelly Rowland from Desiny’s Child!

Check out more of our alumni stories on our Tippie Wall.

We will be on the road again in early December. If you live in the Salt Lake City area, I hope you will join us for our next prospective student dinner on December 3rd.

Shiny and New

Did you notice? The Tippie MBA website got a BIG makeover on November 6th when we launched an entirely revamped and redesigned website. Nearly a year in the making, the new site highlights our revamped curriculum and Career Academies, both designed to create an even greater emphasis on getting you career ready.NewSite_Screenshot

Some big changes happened in the Admissions section, thanks to you.  Nearly all of the improvements in the admisisons section came because prospective students asked for them. A taste of what’s new:

In short, we made sure the important stuff was organized and easy to find. We added information that’s critical for prospective students as they navigate the big decision of where to get their MBA.

The entire site is packed full of new information — so have a look around, and learn something new about Tippie!

Hello and Welcome to Our First Post

Thanks for checking out the new admissions blog! Though I enjoy reading them, this is my first experience blogging. I’m looking forward to it! I’m sure it’s an exciting time for you and I’ll do my best to help you navigate the process of choosing the right business school.

To kick off our admissions blog I’d like to start with what’s probably our most commonly asked question:

What GMAT score do I need to be admitted, and how much time should I spend studying?

What score should you shoot for, and how much should you study? Director of Admissions Jodi Schafer tells you...

First, the GMAT score is reviewed as just one piece of the entire application. While we can give you a guideline, the only 100% accurate way to know if your score is high enough is to review your full application and all the other pieces of it along with your GMAT score.

That said, a good benchmark is our middle 80% range of scores. Last year, for our incoming class, that was 610-720. If you’re below 610 it doesn’t necessarily mean you won’t be admitted, but you’ll need to offset a lower score with strengths in other areas of the application (like work experience or academics). Each school has their own idea of an acceptable GMAT score, so be sure to check with every school you’re considering.

Now, for studying – I recommend starting by taking a few practice tests (find them in just about any GMAT study guide or visit mba.com for old GMAT tests) to see how you’re scoring. This should give you an idea of where you stand — your strong areas, and where you need to study more — and guide you.

Keep this in mind — it’s VERY common to score 30 to 50 points lower on the actual test than you did on practice exams. We’re unsure why this happens, but we hear it often. Keep that in mind so you won’t be disappointed on test day by a score that’s a lot lower than you predicted.

Keep taking practice tests and you’ll build your confidence. Schedule the actual test once you’re consistently getting a score in the range. Remember, you can always take the test more than once. We’ll use the highest score you submit in your application.

Good luck!

Welcome to the Tippie Admissions Blog!

Lots of questions arise during the application process, and not all of them can be easily answered. It’s our goal with this blog to be candid and honest in answering these questions for you.

Here, we hope to address the questions we hear most often – those that can’t be answered just by perusing our site. The slightly more complicated answers to your slightly more complicated questions, basically. Plus you’ll have an opportunity to post comments in response and open up a dialogue with us.

So check back often. Both Jodi and I will be posting regularly.
