The information here has been obtained primarily from Lonely Planet resources and the Wikipedia; it has been arranged for the convenience of students participating in the 2006 Exploration China program. There is a plethora of information available online and in a variety of travel books. Students are encouraged to do their own research. Guangzhou is the capital of the Guangdong province in China. Formerly known as Canton, it has been a major center for international trade for over 300 years. The citizens of Guangzhou have migrated far and wide throughout the world, keeping up trade links with their native city. Indeed, they are well known throughout Southeast Asia as creative, successful, and hard-working entrepreneurs. Guangzhou is at the center of South China's most important trade zone, which includes Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta. Many Chinese Americans have deep roots in this part of South China.1 1.
