Management Information Systems
The management information systems concentration provides you with the tools to apply information technologies as a strategic lever for gaining and maintaining competitive advantage in business. You will learn the theory and practice of computer-based systems used for the collection, storage, data analysis, and information dissemination required for strategic, managerial, and operational decision-making.
Required courses include four from the following: 06K:201, 06K:220, 06K:227, 06K:230, 06K:234, 06K:238, and 6K:277 (contemporary topics course offered periodically).

06K:201 Directed Readings in Management Sciences
Independent study of a specialized topic in management sciences (3 credits)

06K:220 Introduction to Information Systems
Effective ways for business firms to harness the power of information technology for strategic purposes; conventional and emerging architectures of information systems; integrated perspective on structural relationships among information technology components. Case studies emphasized. (3 credits)

06K:227 Introduction to Modeling with VBA
Students learn to use Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) in Microsoft Excel. Basic programming concepts are explored in VBA, macros, and models for decision making in finance, marketing, operations, and accounting. No prior programming experience is required. (3 credits)

06K:230 Database Systems
Theories and methodologies for semantic, logical and physical database design; entity/ relationship diagrams and their mapping to database schemas; normalization languages for relational database systems, including relational algebra, structured query language (SQL), and query by example (QBE); query optimization and index selection; database and view creation, query and update processing; form and report design; practice with commercial DBMS products; integrity, security, congruence control, transaction recovery. Pre or Corequisite: 06K:220. (3 credits)

Explore methods to determine where the ability to capture and reuse organizational knowledge will prove most profitable to companies and how to design processes and technologies to leverage this info. Corequisite: 06K:226. (3 credits)
