International Business

In today’s business world nearly all executives are faced with the globalization of business. The international business concentration exposes you to differences in political, economic, and cultural practices across the global environment. Students choosing this concentration gain a broad range of skills through classroom activities and study abroad opportunities; exposure to international topics offered through other University of Iowa colleges, language courses, and on-site consulting projects.

The School of Management in conjunction with the Institute for International Business offers several unique international opportunities including:

Required courses include four of the following: 06F:223, 06M:235, 06J:246, 06M:237, 06N:235, 06E:125, or 06E:173. As part of the four required courses, you may choose to take three credit hours of a language and/or an international course from another college with prior approval from the Director of MBA Student Services.

06M:235 International Marketing

Domestic versus international perspective; identification and evaluation of opportunities and risks in non-U.S. markets; research problems in global markets; effects of international organizations, foreign exchange, macroeconomic policies, local law, and cultural differences on consumer behavior and marketing decisions; multinational versus global marketing strategies (entry, product adaptation, channel logistics, pricing, promotion); emphasis on practical applications. Prerequisite: 06N:211.

06M:237 Field Studies in Marketing- Latin America Option

Experience in planning, designing, carrying out, reporting on a marketing research project for a profit or nonprofit client organization; communication with managers, application of marketing research, meeting deadlines, converting research findings into action recommendations for management. Prerequisites: 06N:211 and 06N:216. Recommended: 06M:230.

Issues and challenges facing organizations doing business in international markets; social, economic, political factors, business policies and customs in the global environment; may include travel, study abroad.

Management issues encountered in international business settings; assessing international politico-economic and socio-cultural environments; managing a multicultural workforce; forming international structures and alliances; developing international business strategy.

06E:125 International Economics

Modern theories of international trade and investment; role of tariffs and other restrictions of international trade; foreign trade markets, international monetary arrangements, and international economic policy. Prerequisite: 6N:213.

06E:173 Advanced International Economics

Neoclassical model of international trade, imperfect competition and international trade and investment, role of trade barriers; regional trade agreements and the World Trade Organization.
