The primary objective for this course is to introduce you to the principles and practices of programming with Visual Basic for Applications, VBA, in Excel. You will also acquire basic programming skills that can be applied to software development in any programming language. Programming assignments will account for a substantial portion of your time this semester. Upon completion of this course, you should be comfortable with the following concepts.
• MACRO development in Excel
• Variables & data types
• Control Structures
• Functions and subroutines
• Arrays and other simple data structures
• Object oriented programming
• Modeling in Excel
Your obligation in this course includes the following items:
1.
You will need to have your own computer for class and bring it to class.
2. reading assignments from the textbook weekly
3. Choosing a programming partner at the beginning of the course to work with during the course. You should work on all assignments in the course with this programming partner. You will create your groups in the ICON Groups menu item.
4. Programming exercises will be assigned each week with approximately 12 total assignments. They will usually will be assigned on Monday and due before class on the following Monday. These assignments will be submitted in the ICON drop box for 6k227. You will submit just one assignment for your team.
5. Each week we will work through a variety of assignments in class to give you an opportunity to work with the concepts we are covering. You will submit these assignments into the ICON drop box as well and they will be graded on a participation basis only. Please sit next to your programming partner each week in class so that the two of you may also work on in-class assignments. Each of you must submit your own assignment to the ICON drop box at the end of class.
6. There will be a midterm exam based on the material covered during the weeks prior to the exam.
7. The final exam will be comprehensive and will be conducted in the final exam period for the semester.
