Description:   This course is designed to familiarize individuals with current and emerging electronic commerce technologies using the Internet. Topics include Internet technology for business advantage, managing electronic commerce funds transfer, reinventing the future of business through electronic commerce, business opportunities in electronic commerce, electronic commerce web site design, business plans for technology ventures, and social, political and ethical issues associated with electronic commerce.

The purpose of this course is to educate a new generation of managers, planners, analysts, and programmers of the realities and potential for electronic commerce. Text and cases will be integrated to help managers better direct the e-commerce process by integrating business models, marketing, and Internet technology. We will focus on the new ecommerce businesses that are profitable, sustainable, efficient, and innovative and look at the ways that these businesses operate as well as the principles that underlie their e-commerce ventures.

Technologies that underlie an e-commerce venture will be discussed. Topics to be considered include creating a web presence, security, constructing a store, electronic payment systems, global issues and competition, legal and ethics issues, marketing, and planning for our online business.  We look at the technologies that underlie an e-commerce venture and will provide an introduction to these technologies. This includes using databases, providing web access to databases, and designing web pages that effectively reach your customers. We will make use of an actual on-line store front to build a store for your business.

E-Commerce  consumer sales have grown from almost nothing in 1995 to over $228 billion in retail business and over $3.36 trillion in Business-to-Business. This has brought about tremendous changes in business, markets, consumer behavior, and global competition. Of the 121 million households in the US, 87 million or 72% of all households go online. More than 80.5 million households  in the US have broadband access to the internet. (about 66.5% of all US Households.) The growth in this business has companies with well known names like GE, Wal-Mart, Barnes & Noble as well as names that are new entrepreneurial firms such as Amazon, Expedia, and eBay. The recession has impacted lonline sales only to make it stay flat instesad of increase.

About 115 million American adults go online on a given day. 77% send email, 82% use a search engine, and over half get news. The number of individuals of all ages online is about 200 million, up from 193 million in 2008.
