Terry College of Business University of Georgia

Type:
Manual

Topic:
Inventory Management

Summary:
The purposes of the Poker Chip Distribution Game are: 1) to demonstrate the detrimental impact of using traditional single-item, single-firm inventory theory (e.g. min-max or EOQ/ROP) in a multi-item, multi-echelon production/ distribution system; and 2) to have students derive a logically sound production/distribution system for a multi-item, multi-echelon production/ distribution environment using theory of constraints (TOC) and just-in-time (JIT). The concepts of strategic buffering and mixed model scheduling provide the foundation for developing the new inventory management system.
