ACCOUNTING :: Professional Program in Accounting
MAc Program
The Master of Accountancy (MAc) is a nonthesis program that requires a total of 30 semester hours (s.h.) beyond the BBA, at least 12 s.h. of which must be in graduate-level accounting courses and at least 21 s.h. of which must be in 200-level courses.
For those students who enter with an undergradute degree in accounting, the program is designed to be completed within one calendar year. Students with an undergraduate degree in another area of business typically are required to take 45-51 semester hours in order to complete the MAc Program. Those with degrees outside of business typically are required to take 57-60 semester hours to remove academic deficiencies in quantitative methods, business, and accounting.
The MAc Program satisfies the 150-hour education requirement to date for certification and licensure as a CPA, adopted by approximately 45 states and jurisdictions and by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants as a requirement for membership after the year 2000. Iowa's 150-hour law became effective January 1, 2001.
Courses taken during MAc candidacy are designed to build upon the technical skills acquired in an undergraduate accounting program or in accounting courses taken as prerequisites or upon first entering the MAc program. They broaden the student's perspective on the role of accounting in organizations and decision making, and further develop his or her written and oral communication skills. This course work focuses on the conceptual and economic foundations of accounting with applications to current and emerging problems or professional practice. In addition, the master's-level course work provides an opportunity to acquire added expertise in one of four areas of specialization:
Students who do not wish to pursue an area of specialization must complete 30 semester hours beyond the BBA. To complete the Core Program Requirements, at least 15 semester hours must be taken in graduate-level accounting courses and a total of at least 21 semester houes must be in courses at the 200-level.

- Advanced Auditing (6A:230)
